Faculty Women of Color in the Academy National Conference

The Fourth Annual Faculty Women of Color in the Academy National Conference is right around the corner. On April 1-2, 2016, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will host a national conference that offers women of color, faculty, university administrators, post-doctoral and graduate students a unique educational and professional opportunity to network, engage, and learn with peers from around the country. The two-day conference features prominent and well-known women of color scholars as keynote speakers, panelists, and workshop facilitators.

We are excited this year to announce that Julianne Malveaux, President Emerita of Bennett College, author and syndicated columnist; Sonia Nieto, Professor Emerita of Language, Literacy and Culture, School of Education, University of Massachusetts, Amherst; Mia Tuan, Dean of the College of Education, University of Washington; and Kerry Ann Rockquemore, President and CEO of the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity, have all confirmed. They will share their wisdom, insight, and experiences as women of color in the academy. There will also be a special performance by Joy Harjo, internationally known poet, writer, member of the Mvskoke/Creek Nation, and the 2015 Wallace Stevens award winner for poetry.

Please see the attached conference flyer and feel free to share with your colleagues.

Please visit the conference website to learn more about and to register for the conference.

Early bird registration has been extended to February 19, 2016. This is a cost savings of $50.00.

Second Year Graduate Student Spotlight

Each week we will be highlighting a different second year graduate assistant in an effort to help them network in the departmental and geographical areas they will be seeking a job in. Let’s help our outgoing graduate students make connections!

  • Maren Reisch, Graduate Assistant for Student Organizations & Involvement in the SLIC
  • Student Involvement, Student Engagement, Student Organizations, Student Government, Greek Life, Residence Life
  • I am geographically bound to Boston, Massachusetts
  • Student Organizations, Student Involvement, Event Planning, Student Conduct, Supervising Student Employees, Residence Life, Advising Student Leaders, Student Government, Leadership Development
  • I have a passion for building mutually beneficial advising relationships with individual student leaders. In my work as an advisor in the SLIC, I've had the pleasure to work with a myriad of talented individuals who work hard to make USD a home for each student who attends this university. Through our conversations, I find myself discovering not only the incredible potential of our students, but my own potential to create change in a university setting. I enjoy building relationships with students that are based on respect, active listening, and a genuine interest in fostering growth. My previous experience with nonprofits has also been beneficial in my professional development, as I am comfortable with administrative tasks such as budgeting, marketing, and supervising. I am looking forward to bringing collaboration and enthusiasm to my next role!
