Public Safety Trainings

The Department of Public Safety will be conducting presentations on Campus Emergency Procedures and Guidance for Surviving an Active Shooter/Aggressor Situation for the USD community. All USD community members are welcome and encouraged to attend. The training sessions will take place in Serra Hall room 102. There will be two sessions offered each month through November 2017 and one session in December 2017. A campus-training announcement will be sent monthly as a reminder.

Here are the upcoming dates below for September 2017:

  • Tuesday, September 26 at 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM, Serra Hall 102

Please RSVP with Captain Quinton “Q” Kawahara if you are interested in attending.

As a reminder, the Department of Public Safety can also make special presentations to individual departments, student organizations, or any USD group that would like to receive the information as a group.

Please contact Captain Quinton “Q” Kawahara if you would like to learn more about the individual group presentations.

QPR Training

Have you taken QPR Suicide Prevention Training yet? If not, the first training for Fall 2017 is coming up next Thursday, September 28 at 12:30 PM in SLP 412.

QPR stands for 1) Question 2) Persuade 3) Refer - understanding how to use these three simple steps could help save a life. Come learn to identify risk and protective factors for suicide, practice intervening when someone is experiencing a mental health emergency and understand your role in referring a friend or loved one for help. Lunch will be served!

Healthy Masculinities

To continue the conversation around male engagement, we encourage you to explore "Five Things Student Affairs Administrators Can Do to Improve Success Among College Men of Color" by Shaun Harper. It provides great insight into how we can best support men of color and increase engagement outside of the classroom using an asset-based approach. Please consider how we can incorporate the ideas mentioned to further increase the retention of our men of color here at USD.

Student Leadership Experience Letter

As we kick off the academic year, we would like to share a student leader's story and reflection on their experience at USD. An excerpt from their story is included below.

"While reflecting on what defines USD as a place, NPR was on in the car giving a recap of the violence in Charlottesville, VA. Time is bringing us all sorts of challenges up to the surface, some new and others old. This is a time with many voices loudly claiming different truths, with rhetoric becoming increasingly aggressive and political, and talk of it all becoming overwhelming and exhausting... I believe in the mission and core of USD... I believe that despite the politically, racially, and socially tumultuous times that currently rolls over our USD campus, the pursuit of education within a community will stand true, active and loud."

Tech. and Comm. Corner

As you may have noticed, University Communications is trying to cut down and consolidate campus-wide emails by implementing a new email titled "Torero Weekly". This email will be sent to all community members as a weekly newsletter that will highlight important events, news stories, and announcements. This email is primarily populated by MyPostings so now is a good time to revisit the system in order to take advantage of this new communication method. Additionally, Torero Program Board's Blue Buzz uses the same process in importing event data for their weekly communication. Be sure to tag Torero Life under the "Departments" field if you would like to be considered for inclusion in either of these communications.

Any additional questions or special training requests can be sent to Kenny Eng.
